Kia ora Waikato The review of the Animal Welfare Act is an opportunity to improve protection for animals from cruel treatment. In particular, it would be great if we managed to get an independent commissioner of animal welfare established. There are loopholes in the Act that allow chronic suffering of animals (such as the layer hen code) that should be closed, and gains to be made in providing the public information about how animals are treated. We are asking New Zealanders who care about the lives of the millions of animals to make a submission on the review before the 28th of September.
