Greens welcome light rail shortlisting for Wellington
The Green Party today welcomed Greater Wellington Regional Council's shortlist of public transport priorities for Wellington.
Two bus options and one light rail option have been found to have the most merit for a future high quality public transport spine between Wellington Railway Station and Wellington Hospital.
"The Green Party supports the investigation of the three options for high quality public transport shortlisted by the regional council," said Green Party transport spokesperson Julie Anne Genter.
"Light rail will cost a little bit more than enhanced buses, but offers significant advantages in terms of pedestrian safety and emissions.
"Light rail is also the best alternative in terms of creating a more vibrant and attractive city.
"The cost of light rail is very reasonable when you compare it to the low value motorways the National Government is proposing for Wellington."
The Green Party plans to fund 60% of the cost of light rail for Wellington through re-prioritised central government funding.
